About Sandile

Sandile Radebe, born in Pietermaritzburg, has had 12 years of senior management positions in corporate environment, more especially in the transport and logistics of fuels and chemical distribution environment. His last employment with Unitrans as a Regional Contracts manager saw him venturing out on his own by purchasing a transport business in 2005.

Mthofi Logistics is a wholly black owned transport and logistical solutions company situated in Durban, Clairwood, initially running six vehicles, he grew it to twelve vehicles distributing fuels for Engen and Sasol in the southern African region. It is a company that owns a fuel transport – a road tanker transport with its own tanker fleet and subcontracted fleet with Unitrans Tanker division in Clairwood, Durban.

Later he started a fuel importation and trading business as part of the Musiwa Holdings group which have been operating fuel wholesaling business from a 5 million litre tank at Vopak Terminals in Durban, Mthofi Investments (Pty) Ltd is a member of the fuel trading consortium call Musiwa Holdings which has an HDSA wholesale Licence – import permit. As part of the structure of Musiwa all three-member companies undertake their respective fuel trades separately in order to develop different segments of the Southern African fuel markets. Musiwa Holdings started with importations into South African markets through the Durban Port using the Vopak storage terminal.

The Idea was that Musiwa has joint venture set up with one of the international trading companies which will ensure consistent and competitive supply into the local markets. Following two successful 5 million litres of importation and strong opposition from the major oil companies, the JV had to be dissolved until all parties resolve the Vopak tank logistical problems.

Having supplied South African markets in the Coastal and Gauteng Regions, Mthofi Investments realized an opportunity to supply inland markets through the Port of Maputo in Mozambique. In October 2008 it started on a few loads to Mpumalanga customers drawing from Petromoc depots in Matola (Maputo). Later Sandile made a living as an entrepreneur acting as the director of both fuel Wholesaling and bulk distribution businesses railing mining cargo from Postmasburg and then packing it into 20’ containers for railing to the port of Nquga. The business was moving about 30 000 tons of manganese ore per month from between these regions and employs staff of 18 drivers and o□ce personnel. In the two years from 2015, Sandile grew his logistics business into a warehousing and port side handling company called Express Warehousing.

With two independent and separate warehousing operations, Express Warehousing is one of only three companies in the Durban harbour that has the capacity and license to handle the maize / grain imports. This operation warehouses some 60 000 tons of grain imports every month for local and international trading houses, such as Bunge, Loius Dreyfus Company and BTG (Brazil). This operation employs about 35 direct jobs and another 40 indirect jobs monthly since inception.

The other Express warehouse operation is a container de-stu□ng and cross-hauling operation is in the bay head section of the Durban Harbour. This operation employs some 20 employees and turns over R12m per annum. The main customer in this business unit is a Turkish company called EtiMaden, the world’s largest producer of Boron based chemicals. They produce coagulants, fertilizer additives and slag management chemicals. These chemicals have major applications in steel furnaces and slag management. This is what gave us a thorough background and relationships into the steel manufacturing industry.

Sandile’s tertiary education started with a BA Degree followed by an LLB Degree from Natal University. Later he completed the MBA course work, pending the dissertation project from the Westville UKZN business school. Later on, he completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Relations, also from Natal University. He has also completed various management training courses in Fuel and chemical distribution management, Human resources, HSEQ management and facilities management.
